I lived in a cabin on Big Creek north of Santa Cruz, California, on the way to Half Moon Bay. Across the creek from my cabin there was a sheer cliff covered with ferns and moss, with many outcroppings of trees, one of which was a giant redwood. High up in the tree there was a heron's nest. When I would wake up in the morning, I would open the door to my cabin, and the heron would stand up, spread its huge wings, and would give one flap, and would fly out of its nest. I used to sit in the field and sketch the heron as it hunted for food. I had a neighbor who collected and worked with various kinds of wood, and he gave me a block of teak wood to carve. I used it to carve the heron as a testament to the heron's presence in my life.
